7.1 quake in Kumamoto injures more than 50 in Kyushu
A 6.1 aftershock followed about an hour later as Japan opened a crisis center and monitored tsunami threats.
A series of earthquakes shook Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island, Japan, with the main 7.1-magnitude quake injuring more than 50 people, NHK reported on Tuesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) briefly issued a tsunami warning after the main shock. About 10 of the injured were reported from a nursing home in Hikawa City. The quake also sparked several fires and damaged homes and road infrastructure. About an hour later, a 6.1-magnitude aftershock struck Kumamoto again at 17.08 local time with a shallow epicenter. The Japanese government then opened an emergency coordination center at the Prime Minister's Office. Operations at nuclear power plants in and around the prefecture were reported unaffected.
