Venezuela quake death toll rises to 5,069

About 20,000 people remain in displacement camps as the IMF releases US$346 million for reconstruction.

The death toll from twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 5,069, according to an update from authorities cited by AFP and local media. The number of injured was put at 16,740. The two quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck 39 seconds apart and hit coastal areas, especially La Guaira, north of Caracas. The government also reported that about 20,000 residents who lost their homes are still staying in displacement camps with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Jorge Rodriguez, president of the National Assembly, earlier reported that more than 6,400 people had been rescued. As recovery continues, the government drew US$346 million in emergency funds from the IMF to finance post-quake reconstruction.
