PBNU urges end to U.S.-Iran conflict as Hormuz heats up

The appeal followed renewed U.S.-Iran strikes since July 8, with any Hormuz closure seen as a threat to food, medicine and trade flows.

PBNU urged the international community to press all sides to stop the violence in the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran. PBNU Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf delivered the appeal at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday (14/7), while calling on the United States and Israel to halt actions he said harmed the international community and urging the Islamic, Arab and Middle Eastern worlds to promote peace. The appeal came after the United States resumed strikes on targets in Iran since July 8, which CENTCOM described as a response to Iran's actions against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran then retaliated by attacking U.S. assets and military bases in the region. The U.N. has warned that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt the regional and global distribution of food, medicines and essential commodities.
