Thousands in Albania Protest Kushner Resort in Vjosa-Narta

Protesters in Tirana warned the project could endanger flamingos, seals and sea turtles in the protected Adriatic coast zone.

Thousands of Albanians returned to the streets in Tirana on Saturday, June 13, to oppose plans for a luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump. The crowd carried Albanian flags and placards with flamingo images, a symbol of opposition to the project in the protected Vjosa-Narta landscape on the Adriatic coast. The wetland area is home to flamingos, seals and nesting sea turtles. Conservation group PPNEA Bird Life Albania warned the development could disrupt the local ecosystem and make flamingos disappear from the area. Despite the opposition, Albania Prime Minister Edi Rama has continued to back the project and said the construction is legal and wildlife habitat will remain protected.
