Land eviction at former Hotel Sultan in GBK turns violent

The eviction of Block 15 is continuing on state land the government says it rightfully won in court.

The eviction of Block 15 at the former Hotel Sultan site in the Gelora Bung Karno complex in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6) was marked by clashes between sympathizers and security personnel. The eviction was carried out under a ruling by the Central Jakarta District Court covering the land and buildings of the former Hotel Sultan in the GBK area. The government, through the Ministry of State Secretariat and the Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Center, said the land is a state asset under HPL Nomor 1/Gelora. The dispute intensified after PT Indobuildco's building use rights were declared expired in March 2023. In two civil cases at the Central Jakarta District Court, judges ruled that the state is the lawful owner of the land and ordered PT Indobuildco to vacate the area, while also ordering the company to pay royalties for land use from 2007-2023 totaling US$45.356.473.
