Detroit-Windsor bridge opens as US-Canada tariff fight deepens

Why it matters: The $6.4 billion crossing carries a key share of North American trade, but Canada barred US officials from its ceremony.

Traffic began Monday on the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, opening a new trade route even as a tariff clash strains US-Canada ties. Canada held last week's ribbon-cutting without US and Michigan officials after President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods. The six-lane, 1.5-mile span is expected to ease pressure on the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, long the only truck route at the crossing. Canada financed the project at an estimated $6.4 billion, and a recent agreement gives the US government a share of toll revenue for 15 years. Pedestrians and cyclists will be allowed to cross starting Aug. 5.
