Iran drone targeting US Gulf base carries Lamine Yamal photo
Another Yamal image with a World Cup trophy in New Jersey was confirmed fake after verification tools found Google’s SynthID watermark.
An explosive drone launched by Iran and aimed at a United States military base in the Gulf region over the past 24 hours was found carrying a photo of Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal holding a Palestinian flag. The image matched one taken during Barcelona’s La Liga title celebration in May. On the drone body, Iranian media displayed writing in Persian and English describing supporters of Palestine and Iran as world champions. At nearly the same time, another image of Yamal appearing to wear a Palestinian flag beside the FIFA World Cup trophy in New Jersey spread widely on social media. AFP concluded the picture was AI-generated after verification tools detected Google’s SynthID watermark. The circulation of the real and manipulated images came amid Iran’s retaliatory attacks on US bases, including claims of major damage in Erbil, Iraq.
