Gunmen kill at least 30 in Kaduna village raid, residents say

Why it matters: The attack underscores Nigeria's deepening insecurity in the northwest, where armed gangs stage raids and kidnappings.

Gunmen attacked Naridon village in Kaduna state's Kaura council area late Sunday, killing at least 30 people and injuring several others, residents and local civil society figures said. Residents said the assailants opened fire, killed women, children and older people, and set houses ablaze before fleeing. One resident told Reuters that eight children were among the dead, while another said bodies had been taken to a nearby hospital and mortuary for burial arrangements. No group immediately claimed responsibility. Security personnel reached the village the next morning, residents said. The raid is the latest in a region where armed gangs, often called bandits, regularly carry out deadly attacks and kidnappings for ransom.
