Iran protests Ukraine after merchant ship attack in Caspian Sea

Tehran summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires and said the incident could widen the Russia-Ukraine war.

Iran accused Ukraine of attacking one of its merchant ships in the Caspian Sea, an assault that caused an explosion and killed one sailor while injuring another. According to IRNA, Iran's Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Tehran to lodge a protest over what it called a hostile and criminal act. Tehran also claimed the attack had been acknowledged by Ukraine's leadership. Iran said the incident violated Article 2, paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter and could worsen and expand the Russia-Ukraine war. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed the matter in a phone call with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
