Japan raises visa fees by as much as fivefold from July 1, 2026

Single-entry visas will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while multiple-entry visas will increase to 30,000 yen.

Japan's government is raising visa fees for foreign nationals by as much as fivefold, the first revision since 1978. The changes will apply to applications submitted from July 1, 2026. For single-entry visas, the fee will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen. Multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen. Kyodo and Jiji Press reported that the increase follows a decision by Japan's cabinet. Local authorities said rising administrative and operating costs driven by higher prices were the main reason. Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the revision was needed because of inflation. He also said the policy would not have an immediate impact on inbound tourism.
