Ministry of Human Rights sends team to monitor deadly Adonara clash

The ministry said customary mediation may work better than policing after the clash killed at least 3 people.

Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has deployed the Nusa Tenggara Timur regional office of the Ministry of Human Rights to monitor the clash between residents in Adonara, Flores Timur, which killed at least three people and burned dozens of houses on Saturday (18/7). The team is tasked with documenting post-conflict conditions in the community and preparing material for coordination with local government, customary leaders, religious leaders, and other relevant parties. Pigai said experience handling conflicts in the area shows cultural solutions are more effective than an approach that relies only on law enforcement. The Ministry of Human Rights said the field monitoring results will be used to promote a peaceful settlement, respect human rights, and restore a sense of security for affected residents.
