Chinese startup Moonshot released its Kimi K3 model on Friday, pitching it as a top-tier AI system that rivals leading offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. The company said the open-weight model outperformed all competitors except Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 on overall capability, with 2.8 trillion parameters and a one million token context window. The launch rattled investors: shares of rival Z.AI fell 30% in their biggest drop since listing, while MiniMax Group slid 16% amid a broader selloff in Asian tech stocks. Artificial Analysis ranked Kimi K3 ahead of Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on some frontier benchmarks, a first for a Chinese open-weight model.
