Trump backs Infantino for UN chief as FIFA faces fresh criticism

President Donald Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next UN secretary-general, Fox News reported, citing the New York Post, as Infantino also faces renewed criticism over his grip on world soccer. The report said Trump views Infantino as a figure who can unite countries after the 2026 World Cup, which ended Sunday in New Jersey with Spain beating Argentina 1-0. Separately, La Liga President Javier Tebas urged Infantino to step down, saying FIFA is damaging domestic football with policies such as an expanded tournament and added international demands. The next UN chief will be chosen later this year to succeed Antonio Guterres, whose term ends in December.
