Iran sets Ali Khamenei burial in Mashhad for July 9

The procession begins in Tehran on July 4, moves to Qom, then ends at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.

Iran has set a funeral sequence for the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei beginning on July 4, 2026, in Tehran before continuing to Qom and ending with burial in Mashhad on July 9. Iranian state television, IRIB, reported that Khamenei’s body will be interred at the Imam Reza Shrine, an important Shiite holy site in his birthplace. The schedule has shifted several times from an initial plan in March because the war was still ongoing and later because it was considered too close to the Ashura commemoration on 10 Muharram. CNN Indonesia, citing AFP and Fars News reports, said Tehran officials had earlier estimated about 20 million people could attend the procession.
