M6.7 quake in Palu forces patient evacuations from hospitals

BMKG placed the epicenter 42 km southeast of Palu at a depth of 10 km and said the quake posed no tsunami threat.

A magnitude 6.7 tectonic quake shook Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Tuesday (16/6) at 11:27 WITA, prompting the evacuation of patients from several hospitals and causing panic in parts of the region. At Rumah Sakit Samaritan, patients, relatives and health workers hurried to open areas; some patients were moved using wheelchairs and beds. Photos from Palu also showed patients being evacuated to the grounds of Rumah Sakit Anutapura. BMKG recorded the epicenter 42 kilometers southeast of Palu at a depth of 10 kilometers. Strong shaking was reported in Palu, Sigi, Donggala and Tojo Una-Una. BMKG said the quake had no tsunami potential, but several buildings were reported damaged.
